Angelfish Fry – The end of an Era

Just a brief update, I’ve recently moved house so my fish have been relocated to my grandparents’ house. All was going well (they’ve been there a couple of months now) but on return from a trip I noticed one of my angels was missing.

The angel in question was Tom (my female angel from the breeding pair and mother of all of my fry to date), who was later found, dead! Given my current circumstances and the death of one of my breeding pair, more fry in the short term seems unlikely but watch this space, stranger things have happened! I still have 5 angels, including two from my own fry so let’s hope another pair develops.

Angelfish Fry – The Summary

The remaining angelfish (71 of them) have finally moved on, to a different aquatics shop, called Blaydon Exotics. Feel free to check them out, the shop looks great!

I’m currently debating whether or not to continue raising angelfish, due to the issues that I have had with the previous fish shop and the owner messing me around. Life looks a little more scary (and expensive!) when you have 200-300 angelfish with no homes to go to!!

In the short term I intend to write some articles on other aspects of fishkeeping, so please continue to check out my blog, or feel free to make some suggestions for blog posts using the comments box below. I’ll be starting with snails and algae, my two favourite things in the aquarium! ;)

Angelfish Fry Day 127

Here’s a video of the juvenile I’d decided to keep. Here it is having some food in it’s new home!
(sorry it’s sideways, I’ll include a facebook link once I’ve unloaded it there!)

Angelfish Fry Day 126

A bit of an update. I’ve got about 110-120 lil guys left, so a healthy size group, as it turned out. However, today as I was tending to the fish, I spotted a particular one and fell in love with it. It’s now in my main tanks with the big guys. Hopefully it’s a female as I’ve got some male angels I’d like to have a spawn from. The fish I’ve kept is a veiltail koi but it’s picked up more of it’s dad’s traits, in that it is primarily white/yellow with only the odd marks of black. I’ve noticed it’s unusual for a lighter coloured fish from my spawns to have the veiltail trait so when I saw this lil guy I had to keep it!!!

Pictures to follow, comments welcome :)

Angelfish Fry Day 107

Well the first batch of little guys has gone…70 of them to be precise. They went on Saturday (day 105), and the rest should be going this weekend. The initial estimate is that there were over 200 fry,but I will update this when I know for sure.

As a random point, it’d be nice to hear from readers who have any feedback for this blog, so please do get in touch with opinions and suggestions using the comment function below. In the mean time I’ll try and get some final images of the remaining fry.

Comments welcome!

Angelfish Fry Day 97

After a long time away, and much growing taking place, we are eventually at a stage where the fry are big enough to go to their new homes…or in this case a fish shop!

The little guys have been feeding on decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, Tetra Pro Colour (which coloured them up brilliantly, may I add!) and live adult brine shrimp. A major highlight for me was watching them trying to figure out what the brine shrimp were…it took them a little while until one of the quieter fry plunged in and ate one….carnage then ensued!! In recently weeks I have also added bogwood and live plants to the tank, to give the fry something to pick at between meals. The live plants always bring the fry on at a frightening rate, but they don’t last very long with so many little mouthes attacking them!!

Here they are in action:

The fry will be passed on to the shop in batches of around 40 at a time, depending on demand, starting in the next week and, unlike the last time, I won’t be keeping one of them for myself, which is hard.

Angelfish Fry Day 38

The fry are now growing at an impressive rate.  I have started to wean them onto decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, which turned out to be much easier than the last time I raised fry.  I couple of days of 50-50 feeding and they’ve figured out that the still stuff was edible too! Now I’m feeding them on a combination of live and powdered food, and I’ll eventually wean them onto flake, for the sake of their new owners

As can be seen from the footage, today is the first day for the fry without the sponge cover of the filter inlet. To be honest the sponge needed changing so I thought I’d try and see how the fry dealt with the exposed inlet and they’ve been fine. IT now means it’s even easier to keep the tank clean as the flow is much improved. Feel free to let me know what you think of the lil guys…

Angelfish Fry Day 31

Firstly, apologies for the delay in updating the blog! There isn’t too much new information regarding the fry, other than they now look like true angelfish.  Furthermore, due to their continued diet of baby brine shrimp they have a lovely pink/red hue to their fins.  I’ll get some photos and video on here ASAP.

It’s also worth noting that the fry will need to be weaned onto non-live food before being passed onto their new owners, as not too many owners will be pleased having to provide daily live food!  I have gradually been introducing decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, as this has a very high energy density but is obviously still, like flake would be.  As of yet, there hasn’t been too much interest but perseverance is the key here.

Angelfish Fry Day 19

The fry are really starting to look like angelfish now! Take a look and let me know what you think!

As you may be able to see from the video, I have added some bogwood to the tank, to give the fry something to pick at, as last time I found live plants and bogwood seemed to help with their growth. It saves them getting bored too! I have also replaced the sponge covering the filter inlet, which I do periodically to as the sponge can get badly clogged over time.

Angelfish Fry Day 17

Not too much new exciting news, other than the fry and are starting to acquire the slow-moving grace that is commonly associated with angelfish.  Their colours are also starting to become even more apparent.

I will try and get some photos tomorrow, they’re a bit easier to take now that the subjects have calmed down a bit!
